I was browsing Google when I noticed these barbies with natural hair, to which I said, “it’s about time”. When I was growing up barbies only come in long straight hair, that didn’t resemble me at all. It’s a shame really to think about. We’re wondering why little black girls growing up with little to no self esteem. I’m not saying that’s the only factor that contributes to low self esteem, but it definitely doesn’t help it.
Karen Byrd decided to do something about it. She founded Natural Girls United, where she has developed a custom line of dolls that actually resemble African American girls. In my eyes, all beauty is beautiful. Having dolls that reflect our complexion is paramount to little black girls and boys to let them know they are just as beautiful.
