This an article that deals specifically with the coming of natural hairstyles, hair that has not been chemically manipulated or relaxed. The article neatly points out how African American has gone from using relaxers, chemicals that help straighten coil hair, to wearing their hair naturally. The civil rights movement have seen the switch to Afro, which represents autonomy and power for the black community. Black women, at the time, sported Afro so they will not be seen as simply imitating Caucasian women.
In my opinion, the good news is that the number of African American women using relaxer is going down.
